Simple and Graceful Family Garden

Simplicty and continuity define this garden, with a seamless flow from the house to garden, and from the garden to the studio.

Before and after the garden renovation

Having recently completed an extension, our clients’ garden needed a full redesign, and updating now that thier child was a teenager.
The brief was open, with the clients giving us the freedom to explore different options, whilst being mindful of keeping the maintenance to a minimum.
With a recently build office at the back of the garden - with a bike store and shed incorporated - there was a need to provide access for both people and bicycles and people, running the risk of the garden feeling like a corridor.
The core principals of this design are simplicity and flow.
A spacious hardwood deck was installed at the back of the house to manage the very low ground level following the building works. The deck was designed not only to be level with the threshold of the house, but also with the path and the lawn, to provide seamless flow into the garden.
The gently curving path splits, leading to the studio and the bike shed, with a small triangular bed between them which will grow up to partially obscure the bike storage area.
A slatted larch screen and planters were placed to the left of the back doors to hide the side passage and ensure that the deck was a distinct place, and didn’t feel like a thoroughfare.
