GARDEN REDESIGN AND LANDSCAPING
A Japanese Inspired Garden
With a gravel garden close to the house and a blend of Japanese and European styles in the main garden, this space sits lightly in the local vernacular
Before and after the garden renovation
The garden redesign details
-
With large scale construction work coming to an end, we were engaged to create a new design concept that reflected our clients’ long standing interest and extensive travel in Japan.
Keen to ensure that the garden sat harmoniously in the wider, more English, surrounds of west Cambridge, we were asked to find a way to blend the two in a coherent and elegant way.
-
Close to the house the extensive new porcelain patio was chosen to match the internal flooring, making the most of the opportunity to connect to the house and garden through the large slide away doors.
Surrouning this is a Japanese style gravel garden, with mature maples and bamboos setting the scene, complemented by large rocks for additional structure and context.
Moving away from the house, the wider garden is a blend of Japanese and European garden styles, with soft curves and layered planting. The acers and rocks are repeated to provide continutity with the area close to the house.
A small wildlife pond supports nature, whilst a thick rope is wound around the large ash tree at the back right of the garden, to allow a wisteria to climb and flower elegantly in the lower canopy.

KIND WORDS
Ben and Fred made a fantastic team working on our garden, transforming it from a building site piled with rubble and bricks, into a beautiful architectural space which stylishly mirrors the house.
